Olney-Bethesda Soccer League
OBSL was founded by Olney SC (now OBGC) and Bethesda SC as a developmental league for teams in Montgomery County so that players were better able to make the transition into NCSL & WAGS as they older. A partnership was formed with Central Maryland Short-Sided League (CMSSL) to create a greater pool of teams among the two leagues. The two leagues have had between 110 to 130 teams each season competing in several age groups and divisions. This provides for a high quality soccer experience that allows for a structure that places teams of even quality in the same divisions. While OBSL is based in Montgomery County, CMSSL is primarily in Howard County but also includes Frederick, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties.
In recent years, OBSL has expanded with an U8 program whereby teams play two simultaneous 4v4 games side-by-side. It is a very relaxed atmosphere where players are on the pitch and not sitting on the touchlines. The goal is for the kids to put into play what they worked on training during the week. No results or standings are kept. It is about improvement in skills and play each week. This has been useful to new players and those who still need to continue on their skills development before moving onto the 7v7 game.
